The Barrow British League team is working with Barrow born Freelance Designer James Mossop to develop a new team logo. This page will chart the design process. Feel free to leave feedback at the bottom of the page and help us develop the ultimate Barrow logo.

Initial Sketches

Bee + Arrow = Barrow

Submarine

Submarine & Bee Hybrid

Submarine & Bee Hybrid

The Barrow coat of arms features a bee and an arrow. Together, these make up the word Barrow. This initial logo sketch looks to combine a bee and an arrow to create a character that can be adapted to a table tennis posture.
This initial logo sketch draws inspiration from the one thing Barrow is known for throughout the world – submarines.
This initial logo sketch combines the inspiration behind the previous two. It takes the bee and merges it with Barrow’s most famous product – nuclear submarines.

Conclusion: The “Submarine” sketch was the least liked of the three sketches and it was decided that this avenue would not be developed any further.

The bottom “Bee + Arrow = Barrow” sketch was liked as it looked lean, flexible and quick – a bit like a table tennis player. It was suggested that the bee be given human attributes (arms and legs), so it could be adapted into a table tennis pose.

It was decided that the “Submarine & Bee Hybrid” should be developed further as it was an interesting concept and deemed to have definite potential. It was suggested that a leaner and stealthier submarine shape should be investigated with inspiration drawn from the latest Barrow built Astute class attack submarine. It was also suggested that incorporating an arrow into the back of the submarine should be looked at.

First Concepts

Bee + Arrow = Barrow

Bee + Arrow = Barrow

Submarine & Bee & Arrow Hybrid

Submarine & Bee & Arrow Hybrid

The initial “Bee + Arrow = Barrow” sketch has been developed further, adding more detail and depth. The wings of the Bee have been ‘pinned back’ to look like a cloak and arms added to give the Bee table tennis playing abilities.
This concept took on the initial “Bee and Submarine Hybrid” sketch and looked to add an arrow as a submarine propeller and make the submarine look more streamlined and attack like (think recently Barrow built Astute class submarine).

Conclusion: It was felt that the “Submarine + Bee + Arrow Hybrid” concept had run out of steam. The static and inflexible nature of the concept doesn’t suit the team’s image and limits its application.

It was decided that the “Bee + Arrow = Barrow” concept should be developed further. It was felt that the ‘Bee’ character on the right most accurately reflected the Barrow team’s attitude and make-up. From this character, two further concepts are to be developed:

1. Bee having served and looking to play third ball killer.
2. Bee having just played a big forehand topspin.

Second Concepts

Bee + Arrow = Barrow (Bee about to Serve)

Bee + Arrow = Barrow (Bee about to Serve)

Bee + Arrow = Barrow (Bee having played 3rd ball)

Bee + Arrow = Barrow (Bee having played 3rd ball)

The first “Bee + Arrow = Barrow” concept was developed with a larger face to enthasis the bees “expression”.
The first “Bee + Arrow = Barrow” concept was developed with a more dynamic ‘third ball kill’ look.
The face on the left bee has been made less ‘fly-like’ and given subtle skull shading.

Conclusion: It was felt that the enlarged head in the “Bee + Arrow = Barrow (Bee about to Serve)” concept didn’t have the desired effect (that of magnifying emotion). However, the wings on this concept were much preferred over the previous “Bee + Arrow = Barrow” concept.

It was felt that the “Bee + Arrow = Barrow (Bee having played 3rd ball)” concept gave a sense of completion as opposed to the feeling of suspense and menace felt in the original “Bee + Arrow = Barrow” concept. For this reason, it isn’t going to be developed any further.

The design process is going to now rewind back to the first phase “Bee + Arrow = Barrow” concept (see above). Improved wings (giving the appearance of a cape) are to be added as well as the text “Barrow Table Tennis Club”.

First Concepts with Text

"Bee + Arrow = Barrow" Banner

'Bee + Arrow = Barrow' Banner

Returned to the first “Bee + Arrow = Barrow” concept and completed a full colour render with text “Barrow Table Tennis Club”.

Conclusion:

The Bee:

  • The bee is too wasp like and needs to look more like a bee (hairy legs/rounder body)
  • The bat should be red – people didn’t notice the bee was holding a bat
  • The arrow should be a bit longer

The Text:

  • Like the honeycomb concept
  • The bee should be larger and more dominant over the text
  • The font type doesn’t go with the attitude shown by the bee (some comments were the font was generic)
  • The font colour should be bold
  • The bee needs to be tied into the text – one suggestion was the bee abdomen going through the ‘o’ of Barrow.
  • The text ‘table tennis club’ is too small

Second Concepts with Text

Bee + Arrow = Barrow

Bee + Arrow = Barrow

Bee + Arrow = Barrow (With Rivets)

Bee + Arrow = Barrow (With Rivets)

The bottom of the bee has been made rounder without making the bee look “fat”.

The bee has been integrated with the text with the ‘o’ reworked to look like steel portholes (tie in to Barrow’s naval history). The arrow has been separated out to make it look more obvious.

Colour has been introduced to the font in keeping with the bee colour range and the subtle hive pattern retained. The font size of ‘Table Tennis Club’ has been increased.
Here, ‘rivet’ detailing has been added to the porthole element.
