Barrow Table Tennis Centre and Barrow Borough Sports Council have teamed up to encourage the area’s ethnic groups to become involved in sport in Furness.

Table tennis coaches at the centre, based at Furness Academy’s South Site, have started running sessions in conjunction with the Barrow Multi-Cultural Forum to get more people taking up the paddle.

The sessions, which run every Monday, have already attracted members of Furness’ Kosovan and Albanian communities and the organisers are hopeful more individuals will soon come along.

“We just want to see if we can provide a route into sport for the different ethnic groups in the area,” said coach John Harrison.

“Table tennis is the national sport in China and there might be members of the Chinese community, for instance, who want to come and give it a go.

“For all we know there might be two or three kids in the town who turn out to be absolute wizards at the sport.”

The sessions run every Monday between 7.30pm and 9pm, for both youngsters and adults.

Anyone who wants to attend can just turn up on the night, or can contact John Harrison on 07814 163887.

Coaching and equipment will be provided and both able-bodied and disabled athletes are welcome to come along.
