2009 – 2010 Season
The 2009 – 2010 season saw Barrow grow from a single British League team to two.
The first team, Barrow I, competed in Division 1 North of the British League. The team consisted of original Barrow team members: Bradley Evans, Jonathan Crawford, Scott Crawford, Tristran Swan and Steve Dixon. Joining them and replacing last season’s number 1 Gavin Rumgay, who had transferred to British League Premier Division team Sycamore, Barrow signed Croatian Number 4 Jakov Krivić – a major coup!
Throughout the season, Barrow I performed consistently and matched last season’s performance finishing third in Division 1 North. In doing so, the team once again achieved a British League Play-Off place.
Unlike last season, Barrow I were able to field a full strength team during the play-offs. The team consisted of: Jakov Krivić, Bradley Evans, Jonathan Crawford and Scott Crawford. Throughout the play-offs the team performed beyond expectations, particularly Jonathan Crawford who came away with a 100% record. The team itself won the play-offs and in doing so gained promotion to the British League Premier Division. This is a truly remarkable and historic achievement for Barrow which now ranks the team amongst the top 8 teams in Britain!
The newly formed second team, Barrow II, competed in Division 2 North of the British League and found things a lot more difficult.
With the exception of Scott Crawford, Barrow II consisted of new squad members and British League virgins: Steve Temple, Neil Yardley, Graham Coupe, Mark Temple, Tom Smith, Grant Woodhouse and Callum McMahon.
Throughout the season, Scott Crawford was Barrow II’s lynchpin with a strong 86% winning average. However, the rest of the team struggled to back-up Scotty’s victories. As a result, Barrow II found itself propping up the league table right through to the final weekend of the season.
During the final weekend, the team came together, drew on the experiences gained throughout the season and remained calm. This resulted in a superb, but dramatic victory over second from bottom Elgre Nottingham II. This win saw the team move from the foot of the table into 2nd from bottom. A position Barrow II held onto, thus guaranteeing British League Division 2 North table tennis next season.
